School started this week with a new plan of action! I was not really enjoying all the worksheet/workbook stuff we were doing. The kids were getting board and not enjoying school. I have always enjoyed learning, so I didn't like seeing them not wanting to do school.
SO this Christmas, my mother in law got me the Konos program. We started this on Monday with a 4 day school week and a fun activity and Library time on Fridays. The children are loving this.
We are having a more intense Bible Reading time, which they all love. Alex loves reading his bible to Tylor and Melodey. Tylor is all about know all the books of the Bible and helping Alex and Melodey find their spots in the Bible. Melodey is our memory girl! She is all about memorizing God's Word.
Then we are doing the phonics and grammar through Sing Spell Read and Write, but I am letting them choose their own books to read. Alex is reading a Star Wars Comic book (like a chapter book) only in comic form. He is loving this. Tylor is going through all the Dr. Seuss books. He loves the rhyming and the silliness of the books. Melodey is still just starting to really read on her own and loves the books that come with the Grammar program.
We are using Saxton Math. I was not sure this was My program to use, but I moved them all up to where they were being challenged instead of busy work and now they are all really enjoying it. Melodey is doing the 2nd semester of 1st grade math, Tylor is doing the 2nd semester of 2nd grade math and Alex is in the middle of the 3rd grade math.
I love seeing the excitement about learning as we go on with this new style of learning. We are having a lot of family reading and movies about the subject we are studying. Right now we are doing Obedience and the kids are loving seeing how people choose to Obey God even if their rulers tell them not to.
So as we are growing together in this homeschool adventure, I am finding that I was trying to make my kids stick to an 8-3 school day, just as the public schools do. That wasn't working and all of us were stressed out about it. This is much better having the major work done between 9am and noon and in the afternoon we are having family activities that are helping reinforce the topic.
I love Homeschooling!

Congratulations on making this change! It can be so hard to admit the need to adjust! However, I wish I had done it sooner while my kids were young.
Blessings...and thanks for adding me to your sidebar.
